The print begins with a sheet of linoleum, carved by the artist using traditional gouges to create channels, ridges, and surface breaks. These carved plates become printing blocks, each one inked manually with a brayer. The ink is applied in thin, controlled layers to preserve detail while allowing subtle tonal variations: the hallmark of analogue printmaking. Once inked, the lino block is pressed onto the jersey panel by panel, using pressure, alignment, and repetition to transfer the design directly to the fabric. Because jersey has natural stretch and movement, each pull requires micro-adjustments in pressure and angle to ensure a clean transfer. This process cannot be rushed or mechanised; it relies on the printer’s ability to read the fabric, the ink density, and the block in real time. No two impressions land identically. The slight shifts in texture and tone
echo the abrasions of the Brooklands track surface — imperfections that speak to
speed, friction, and tooling. When the final prints are cured and set, each garment
is hand-numbered by the artist, marking its place within the limited edition and
acknowledging the manual labour behind every panel.
