Hank dyeing in Japanese, is a process in which a certain amount of yarn (specified in yards depending on the type of yarn) is pulled parallel and wound around a hank or frame. It's easier to understand if you imagine the yarn loosely bundled in parallel. When dyed in this state, the yarn is not under tension, allowing the dye to penetrate deep into the core in a natural state. Because the dye is left in its natural, unstretched state, the resulting dyed yarn has a characteristically fluffy, soft texture. The opposite of hank dyeing is "cheese dyeing," in which the yarn is wound into a cylindrical cheese shape, circulating the dye between the centre and the periphery. While this method allows for quick and efficient dyeing, the tightly wound yarn is naturally under tension, resulting in a distinctive look. The design is inspired by a vintage US navy shirt.
