The "jungle fatigue" uniform, a tropical field uniform adopted and issued during the Vietnam War, featured trousers that, like the jacket, had exposed buttons in the first model, but were later replaced with concealed buttons in the second model and beyond. In Vietnam, where most of the fighting took place in the jungle, exposed buttons would get caught on branches and equipment, so the second model was improved with concealed buttons that were not visible outside the flap. Furthermore, the straps that secured the contents of the cargo pockets were eliminated, and the waist adjustment tabs were changed from buttons to metal fittings, and the material was changed to ripstop fabric. Because the first model was only in service for a short period, the number of surviving examples is extremely small, making it highly rare.
